TRAUMA / PTSD

THERAPY FOR TRAUMA AND/OR POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

Traumas can affect us in every aspect of our life, including our relationship.  Whether it be in coming up in our reactions to our partner, fears of abandonment, difficulties, with trust, struggling with anxiety in the relationship, or emotional reactivity, by understanding PTSD and how it shows up in a relationship, we can begin to overcome it.  To truly be connected to our partner emotionally and physically, we need to be able to feel safe and have the ability to be vulnerable, which are often hard to do when we've experienced trauma.

I use an effective approach to couples therapy, called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (an approach I am certified in and am also one of a small group of therapists in the Bay Area who are also a certified EFT supervisor), as well as integrate aspects of Gottman Method Couples Therapy.  Integrating technique like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing can help in processing the trauma and how gets triggered in the relationship.  Also, through an understanding of PTSD and Complex PTSD, the couple can learn skills that can help during emotional flashbacks and utilize the relationship to help come back to ourselves.

Working through trauma can be scary, but as a couple, the individual does not have to do it alone.  We say, your partner can not fight the dragon for you, but at least you don't have to be alone in the cave.  Our goal is to have a safe, close, connected relationship where each partner is feeling fulfilled emotionally and physically, while both feeling safe.
