INSURANCE
I am an out-of-network provider and can provide statements that can be submitted to your insurance if you have a PPO plan.
If you have an HMO plan or have Medicare, they will not accept a statement from an out of network provider. I am listed in Cigna and Aetna's in-network information, although that is because through my nonprofit (Bay Area Community Counseling), I supervise associates and post-docs who are able to see clients in-network with these insurances, and this is how the insurance companies cover prelicensed clinicians, by having the supervisor listed.
When calling your insurance to determine your coverage, give them the tax id/EIN number: 81-1088163, (The Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy, my group practice) and possibly NPI# 1750446647. Ask what your deductible is, what percentage of the fee they pay, their customary rate, and how many sessions you are allowed per year. They may ask for a procedure code, which would be 90834 for Individual Therapy or 90847 for Family or Couples Therapy. Mental health coverage varies by plan.
It's important to be aware that it may take the insurance company a few months to process your receipts for repayment. Additionally, the insurance company may state that they cover a certain percentage of out of network services, although they usually won't state the percentage of what amount. For example, an insurance company might say they cover 80%, but the usual and customary rate they cover is $100 per session, so the reimbursement would be $80 per session. Another company may say they cover 50%, but they might not state the usual and customary amount is $300, so you'd be reimbursed $150 per session. Please make you sure you do your due diligence to determine what is affordable to you and I'm happy to also provide referrals to either my group practice, The Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy, where we have licensed, experienced therapists or our associated nonprofit, Bay Area Community Counseling, where we have licensed therapists developing their expertise in certain approaches and issues, and associates, working under the supervision of licensed therapists as they complete their hours for licensure.
I also run a nonprofit, Bay Area Community Counseling, where I train and oversee associate and post doc therapists who can see clients on a sliding scale, as well as take Cigna and Aetna insurances and Victim's Compensation. If you have any questions about working with an associate at BACC, please go to www.sf-bacc.org. If you would like to support therapy for those in financial need, please go to www.sf-bacc.org/donate to donate today.
